AMA National Model Aviation Day – August 11TH!

Happy National Model Aviation Day!

Tomorrow is the official celebration of National Model Aviation Day. We invite all members to celebrate by attending an event near you, flying with friends at your local field, or by reaching out someone to invite them to learn more about the hobby.

Thousands of model aviation hobbyists will celebrate the sixth annual National Model Aviation Day with over 60 free events across the country, which are open to the public. This national event will bring together aviation enthusiasts and members of local Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) clubs to enjoy flying model aircraft and learn about safety.

Activities at each local event vary, including plane demonstrations, simulated flying stations, fly-ins and much more. To find an event near you, visit: http://nationalmodelaviationday.org/find-an-event/.

Many participating AMA clubs are also raising money to support a number of local charities and the AMA Foundation. We thank those clubs that are going above and beyond!

No matter how you choose to celebrate, let us know on social media using #ModelAviationDay. And send those images (high resolution preferred) to your AMA Vice President for a chance to be featured in Model Aviation magazine!

Happy Flying,

AMA & AMA Foundation Staff and Leadership

On Behalf of Checkerboard Radio Control Club, get out to the field and enjoy the Hobby!

July “CARRIER Landing” Fun Fly Cancelled

We were at the field this AM to set up the Carrier Event Fun Fly, but without planes and pilots the Fun Fly could not get off the ground. We held the hope until about 2:30, and then packed up. The rain and winds this AM most likely kept the pilots in their hangars working on their planes. Since the same mixed bag of weather is in store for tomorrow “Sunday”, we have decided to cancel the Carrier Fun Fly for July. A big Thank You to the Faithful Few that came to the field today willing to accept the challenge and support the cause, I am grateful for your efforts.

We also have decided that since we do not have a scheduled Fun Fly for August, that we will reschedule the “Carrier Landing” Fun Fly to fill the opening. The Carrier Landing challenge will be slightly different this year, so I hope you can save the date and make it out on Saturday August.18th at Noon! We will have the Club Meeting on Thursday August 16th to discuss the details and lock the time.

Mother Nature won today, let’s not let her win the battle on August 18th!

Forest Preserves of Cook County: Parking

By order of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, we are no longer allowed to park along the path from the parking lot to the center line. As stated numerous times in the past, we are also not to park at the center line.  The center line pad and stalls are designated for loading and unloading.  NO PARKING! Violators will be ticketed and towed at the owners expense. Forest Preserve Police will now be frequenting the flying site looking for violators. There is no lifting of this parking mandate for the foreseeable future.

As we have stated on several occasions, parking along the path was granted by the FPCC as a privilege, as long as the lot was full.  We have now lost this privilege.  It’s unfortunate that we have now lost this valuable parking area. We have a unique privilege to fly at Checkerboard Field / Miller Meadows, but remember, it is not our property.

Please pass this information along to fellow flyers and assist in the enforcement of the rules while at the field.

Thank you

Checkerboard RC Club March 15th Meeting / Auction

The March 15th club meeting, we will be holding our club auction. We are looking to our members to bring in and donate all related items to our hobby. We all have items such as kits, built planes, motors, radio equipment, building supplies, etc. that we no longer need and want to find a good home for. What a great way to give those items a purpose again.
The auction is a fun event where you can bid on some old and new unique items. What’s the old saying?, “One mans trash is another mans treasure”.
All proceeds raised will benefit our club.
By popular demand, John Eggum will return as our auctioneer.
Remember to bring cash!! No checks or money orders.

Meeting / Auction starts at 7:00 pm

See you all there!
